Cleats are plain components boaters don't give much thought to, but they are what actually prevents your boat from drifting away. These little helpers are available in many styles and materials, so regardless of the size of boat and your preferences, you are sure to find the right models to create a reliable cleat setup on your craft or dock. The most common type seen on docks is a traditional horn cleat. S-style cleats have a slightly altered shape to make tying and untying easier. Tired of stubbing your toes against a standard cleat? Stainless steel remains a favorite material for cleats, simply because it is robust, durable, and looks great. There are a variety of less expensive options that may work well for you, including galvanized steel, aluminum, nylon, chrome-plated zinc or brass, and wood. The choice of material depends on how strong you need your cleats to be, your budget, and aesthetic considerations. The size of cleat depends on the size of line, which in turn has to correspond with the dimensions of the boat. Take into account such things as additional lines you may need to use in the future.
