In order to stay afloat and be comfortable for a crew, a boat has to be well-protected from water that gets onto the deck and cockpit and tends to collect in a bilge and some other compartments. Therefore, most vessels come equipped with self-draining systems including a bilge pump and various drains. While the pump is responsible for removing the water that inevitably appears in the bilge, passive drainage systems make sure that the water collecting on the deck or transom zone comes out via scuppers.
Available in different diameters, deck drains usually consist of a flat or concave head and a hidden part that allows you to connect a pipe or hose. Most drains are made of plastic or stainless steel, and some of them have a strainer to filter out large debris and unwanted objects. For improved aesthetics, these parts can be covered with louvered drain covers that are made of the same materials. Some covers have a flange meant for smoother installation and hiding the hole's raw edges.
