A depth finder is a navigation device that can greatly increase your safety offshore and significantly improve the comfort of boating. Also known as a depth sounder or echo sounder, the device typically makes use of sonar technology to determine the precise depth of water as well as pinpoint the objects underwater near your boat. The device makes it possible to determine shallow places dangerous for navigation and find out the depth and location of fish.
Sonar is a method that uses sound navigation technology and ranging. When the sound waves sent by the depth finder penetrate the water, they are reflected by the objects the waves encounter and are then sent back to the sonar. Based on the time it takes for the sound waves to be reflected from the objects underwater and the size of the wave, the depth finder generates a digital image of the identified objects. Basic depth sounders are designed to simply determine the depth, while some more sophisticated units will create detailed 3 dimensional diagrams that specify an entire range of underwater features.
A depth finder usually consists of two parts: a screen that serves for inputting and outputting the data and a sonar device that emits the sound waves. The first is placed on board, while the latter is positioned underneath the boat. High-tech depth sounder LCD displays can generate monochrome or multicolor 3D maps with a variety of sonar data. The average depth range of personal boat depth finders is between 2.5’ and 200’. Commercial depth sounders are usually more advanced and expensive, being capable of working at greater depths with additional precision. Accurate sonar readings can be made at speeds not higher than 63 mph.
Most modern depth finders have auto-sensitivity and auto-ranging features. Swiftly reacting to the detected changes in depth, the depth sounder has a three-stage warning system. Giving audible and visual upper and lower depth alarm signals, the device allows you to quickly react to any potential hazards. Including GPS and pre-loaded cartography, depth finders are capable of providing you with almost picture-like image of the water underneath your boat. Coupled with a proper shoot-through, through-hull or transom mount transducer, your depth finder will always deliver its top performance.
