About the the ‘Round Britain tour’

This extraordinary milestone tour, split into two legs, will see Bessie Ellen calling in at fourteen UK ports. The history of this Westcountry trading ketch

Built in 1904, this wonderful trading ketch has a remarkable heritage, from transporting goods around Britain, to being purchased by a Danish captain in 1947, for a stint in the Baltic. Having Voyaged through the changing tides of history, this listed National Historic Ship has since been restored (almost 100 years since her creation), allowing her to serve as a vital part of our maritime heritage.

It seems, Bessie Ellen, as she is today, has an incredible purpose of connecting us to the skills, stories and traditions of the trading and exploring mariners of the past, which in turn may promote a healthy and developing system of maritime trade for the future.

From the owner and Skipper

‘We are excited for the Round Britain tour, celebrating this beautiful ship and enabling numerous communities around the United Kingdom to access Bessie Ellen and see first-hand why she is so special. Bessie Ellen hails from the days of Britannia ruling the waves, when goods were transported over the oceans and navigation was by stars and charts. In keeping Bessie Ellen alive, we are maintaining our connection to this significant part of our sailing history, ensuring its survival for generations to come.’ – Nikki Alford

Ship Models: A History of Shipping in Miniature – 10th February – 26th May

An exquisite exhibition exploring the history of ship models over the centuries, and the evolution of ship building design, opens at the Scottish Maritime Museum (Irvine Harbourside) this Saturday – 10th February.

Model-boat-mayflower-II-1956
Model Mayflower II, 1956

At the end of the last century, the building of model ships became hugely popular. From models built by professional and amateur shipyard modellers, to beautiful glass ship bottles, this exhibition explores the history of this art with a diverse and spectacular collection.

This exhibit, on the history of miniature ships, displays the wide range of materials used in the building process, while shining a light on the cultural influence of ship models, and on ship design for travel, trade and warfare.

Consequently, combined with the success of the British Navy during the 18th and 19th centuries, this led to widespread interest in ships and models. These miniature boats developed from being decorative and part of a design process, to also becoming functional toys for children.

What to expect at the new Scottish Maritime Museum exhibition

This exhibition is a voyage through history. It explores building models in the Ancient world, to the Royal Navy’s use of models in warfare ship design and ways the commercial world has utilised this art.

Continuing the success of past exhibitions, the show also celebrates the beauty and skill in the crafting of glass ships in bottles.

The exhibition concludes with taking a look at the exciting and growing world of amateur model making today. The perfect inspiration for budding designers!

Tigris

This classic gaff cutter was built in 1899, a Clyde 20-ton class, commissioned by the Clyde Corinthian Sailing Club to a design by the great Alfred Mylne. Of the five yachts built by Mylne for this class, only Tigris survives.
She underwent a complete restoration in 2001 and was most recently refitted in 2014, when she was sent to the famous Brittany yard of Chantier du Guip in Brest. Renowned for their expertise in all aspects of wooden boat construction, they proceeded to strengthen and upgrade her structure.
Work included (but was not limited to) the rebuilding of the stem, the fabrication and fitting of new bronze floors, the addition of a new mast step laminated in Iroko with stainless steel strengthening, and the rebuilding of parts of the bulwarks. Now for sale for the first time in many years, Tigris represents a great opportunity to purchase a vessel in near original configuration, in excellent condition, and capable of continuing the regatta-winning tradition for many generations to come.
Tigris can accommodate four guests, with one in the forecabin and three in the saloon.

Outlaw

It was in 1963 that Outlaw led the British team to victory in the Admiral’s Cup under the ownership of Sir Max Aitkin, a well-known figure in offshore racing. Twenty years later this famous yacht was rescued by a 30-year-old sailing enthusiast, and a new life started for this Souter’s built Illingworth & Primrose designed racing machine. After an 18-month rebuild, she headed south, first to Portugal, then on to the Med, where in 1989 she found her new home on the Côte d’Azure. For the last 32 years she has been raced and cruised by that same owner, between Southern Italy and the Balearics, taking part in all the major Mediterranean regattas in Argentario, Imperia, Antibes, Cannes, St Tropez, Barcelona and Mahon to name just a few. She won the overall Classic Prada Cup in 2000 and the Panerai Trophy in 2005, as well as many other more recent victories. Now after a 37-year stint of ownership, OUTLAW is being put up for sale through Edmiston, in better condition than at any time since that 1963 launching.

Candida

One of the last of the great 23m Class racing yachts, Candida was built to the International Rule, and along with Astra and Cambria is a well-known addition to the Mediterranean classic yacht circuit.

These fine yachts were later converted to the J Class rule, and competed against such vessels as Endeavour, Velsheda, and Shamrock V. It is a testament to the quality of construction of the time that all these vessels are still going strong today.

Candida’s interior includes a main salon complete with a dining area and coffee table which can comfortably welcome up to six guests. The en-suite twin master cabin features a skylight, a central desk and a dressing table, while the en-suite twin guest cabin offers good storage facilities. Both allow Candida to accommodate up to four guests in a cosy and authentic atmosphere.

Candida was converted to a yawl rig in 1938, and spent many years under the name ‘Norlanda’. In 1996 she was returned to her J-Class configuration, with her 47-metre wooden mast, a huge array of assisted winches, and many of the steel frames rebuilt. It is thanks to her rigid steel framework and the regular maintenance schedules of her owners that Candida’s hull is in such fine condition.

Fei Seen

The 30 metre ketch motor sailor Fei Seen was built in 1961 by the renowned German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen, using the finest materials.

This beautiful luxury sailing yacht was originally commissioned by an US Admiral who sadly died one year later, she was then purchased by the Carghill family, owners of the Carmac range of motor yachts.

Fei Seen is the epitome of the heavy Philip Rhodes motor-sailor, perfect for comfortable long distance cruising. She can accommodate up to six guests in three pleasant staterooms. Her general layout suits both deck lifestyle for warmer climates and interior living for periods spent in colder cruising grounds. With her sturdy centreboard she is ideal for many parts of the world inaccessible to deeper draught vessels.

She has been kept in good condition over the years with numerous refits including her latest five-year survey carried out in 2013 as well as major refit in 2003.

Moonbeam of Fife

Known as one of the most successful and most recognised classic yachts in the world, Moonbeam of Fife excels on the regatta circuit, consistently coming in the top three.

Commissioned by the lawyer Charles Plumtre Johnson, the 30-metre sailing yacht was built in 1903 by William Fife as Moonbeam III. She was the third in a series of four Moonbeams and hull number 491 to leave the Fife yard and is considered to be one of the most acclaimed classic yachts around.

Not only a fast cruiser, she is proven on the regatta circuit, regularly taking part in the Mediterranean regatta scene, where she has taken part in virtually every major Mediterranean regatta on the circuit, coming in top three since 2001.

Having undergone numerous refits over the years, she allows guests to enjoy comfortable long distance cruising with the authentic feel and elegance of a classic sailing yacht. She can accommodate up to four guests in two pleasant cabins, a double and a twin.

Her streamlined shape, handy size and intelligent sail plan make for an extremely beautiful, comfortable and fast vessel, with all the expected amenities of a luxury sailing yacht.

Rugosa

This classic sailing yacht, last refitted in 2007, has proven herself as both a family cruiser and an accomplished racer

The 21.94-metre yacht was built in 1926, a New York Yacht Club 40, the most coveted model in a distinguished line of Nathanael G Herreshoff NYYC One-Design classes. Uniquely, Rugosa was built as a yawl, and has the potential to beat the existing NY40s that successfully compete on the Mediterranean circuit, namely Marilee, Rowdy and Chinook.

In her early years, Rugosa won the 1928 Bermuda Race under the ownership of the first of many owners, Russell Grinnell of Providence, Rhode Island. She went on to have notable racing successes before being bought by Halsey Herreshoff, grandson of NGH, who has cruised and raced extensively on her in his 30 years of ownership. She famously beat 58 top classics in the 2001 Americas Cup Jubilee in Cowes.

Rugosa’s most recent refit was in 2007, when much structural work was done. With many miles sailed since then, another refit should be envisaged by the next custodian, to bring her up to perfect condition.

Rugosa can accommodate eight guests in traditional open plan accommodation, suitable for a racing crew, regatta charter, or family use.

Thendara

Thendara represents the ultimate in civilised cruising, with a level of ease rarely found on board a classic yacht.

The story of this elegant vintage yacht begins in 1936, when Sir Arthur Young, one of Scotland’s leading yachtsmen, commissioned the legendary Alfred Mylne to design her.

Built and launched the following year by the Clydeside yard of Alexander Stephen & Sons, she was an immediate success on the racing circuit, and went on to provide her owner and guests with many pleasurable years of cruising.

In 1993, Southampton Yacht Services carried out a full refit. Her interior design sees a main saloon complete with a formal dining area. Finished in mahogany panelling, there is an abundance of charming and completely original Edwardian features. Three elegant en-suite cabins accommodate up to six guests in true comfort and style, including two doubles and a twin. Thendara yacht can also accommodate up to seven crew members in three cabins, including the Captain’s cabin.

On deck, an additional dining option, sheltered or not, can be set up. Providing an outstanding combination of speed, comfort and grace on the water, Thendara offers a unique opportunity to join the thrilling world of classic yacht racing.

Cruises can take different shapes depending on the country you are visiting. From grand cruise ships which can accommodate hundreds to quaint junk ships that sail through Halong Bay in Vietnam, each country offers a unique experience. Kenya is no different. If you want to experience a unique cruise in Kenya, consider going on a dhow cruise.

What’s a dhow cruise?

To start things of, what is a dhow exactly? Boating enthusiasts are probably familiar with the name. A dhow is a type of sailing vessel found primarily in the Indian Ocean region. A dhow is recognizable by its thin, lengthy hull and settee sails. Dhows come in all shapes and sizes, and especially in the past dhows could reach staggering sizes. They were used primarily to transport goods.

Today, dhows are not used as much for transporting goods, since more efficient means have since become more popular. To not have these beautiful vessels go to waste, countries like Kenya offer tourists the unique experience of sailing on the waters of the Indian Ocean on a dhow ship.

What can I expect?

Dhows in Kenya are primarily used to traverse the waters around the Lamu archipelago. You can cruise through the various isles that make up the archipelago, whether it be in the early morning to see the beautiful sunrise, or at night by moonlight. The waters here are calm, so you can relax and watch the scenery pass you by.

Most dhow cruises depart from the city of Mombasa. They come in various shapes and sizes. For example, there are cruises that include moonlight lobster dinners while floating around on the waters. Others include stops at locals islands to engage in activities like diving and snorkelling. Still others take a more basic approach, allowing tourists to experience the true authentic dhow experience: you’ll eat freshly caught seafood which is cooked right there on the ship and at night you simply bed down where there is space.

Regardless of which variety you pick, they all include the beautiful scenery Kenya is known for.

Dhow cruise in Kenya: tickets and visa

While prices can vary depending on the type of cruise you take, you should expect prices to start at around £100 per person for a dhow cruise. If you want some added luxury, expect prices to quickly reach above £200 per person. Remember to bring your own sunscreen, towels and other forms of protection against the sun. Kenya is a sunny country, and while this offers a lot of benefits for tourists, spending to much time on the open waters under the sun can be dangerous without protection. You might also want to carry insect repellent (such as DEET) to protect yourself against mosquitos, which can be quite annoying.

Kenya visa

Kenya is among the most popular African holiday destinations for western tourists. It is very modernized, and puts in a lot of effort to accommodate tourists. One part of this modernization is Kenya’s visa system. Unlike most countries in the world, Kenya has fully digitized its visa system. This means that since the start of 2021, the only way to apply for a Kenya visa is online. This was done to speed up the system, since online applications can be processed much faster than embassy visa applications.

To apply for a visa, simply fill in the online application form and make the payment. If everything is approved, the visa is generally approved within 8 working days.

Unlike other visas, which can be applied for in advance of booking your flight and hotels, the situation is reversed in Kenya’s case. The form requires you to fill in not just your expected date of arrival and departure, but also at least one booked accommodation. This can be a hotel or the address of family or friends.

Once you’ve taken care of all that, you’re all set to enjoy the unique experience of a dhow cruise in Kenya!

Leading British boat charter marketplace Borrow A Boat, and recent Headline Sponsor of the Southampton International Boat Show in 2019, is offering a new investment opportunity to boaters and the wider public via crowdfunding on Seedrs.

The company, which was founded by Matt Ovenden in 2016, has been growing fast in recent years and now provides charter access to over 35,000 boats in 65 countries. It is one of a small handful vying to become the definitive global boat charter platform. Borrow A Boat has raised over £3.3m in capital to date including the backing of a Venture Capital investor and has had a number of successful previous crowdfunding rounds.

The company was the first in the UK to offer peer-to-peer charters and has since become a
conduit for all commercial charter fleets worldwide, as the industry goes through a process
of adapting for the 21st century customer, who expects to be able to browse and compare
options online and book at the click of the button.

As a user you can upload a sailing licence, and search for boats by location, either in the UK or abroad, and book flexible dates at short notice. Matt comments: “It’s what customers expect nowadays. They have the choice to browse different options and prices online for everything nowadays from shopping, to TV, films, flights, and music in other areas of their life, and now expect boat charter to be no different, so we’re making boating available easily and for the masses, but helping the industry and boat owners at the same time.”

In 2019 the platform expanded into superyachts, via a sister brand Borrow A Boat Plus, and now offers over 2000 superyachts and luxury yacht charters worldwide.

As it has for so many, 2020 has provided additional and unexpected challenges, but Borrow A Boat is optimistic about the rebounding of the boating sector in 2021. Matt says: “In 2020 we have seen a real suppression of the international charter market, but a growth in UK charters.

“With light at the end of the tunnel and the vaccine being rolled out, we’re very excited about the 2021 season and all of that pent-up demand coming through, and we can’t wait to help people get out on the water again!”

The company plans to expand to reach customers in eight new countries in 2021 and is offering the chance to invest in the business as it continues to grow. View the pitch on Seedrs to find out how you can get involved.

The investment opportunity is offered on the terms of the government’s new Future Fund
