It was beef that created an empire, and broccoli that has lost it!”

She’s moored next to a replica of the Matthew which John Cabot sailed to the Americas. She looks well loved, and ready for plenty more sea miles.

The coast guard are deserving of praise in rescuing so many of the crew under such dangerous circumstances, so sorry for the loss of Claudine Chistian.

Comment on Gustave Trouve: Inventor of the outboard re-discovered by Gregson https://www.classicboat.co.uk/articles/gustave-trouve-memoirs-of-a-motorboating-man/#comment-2459 Sat, 13 Oct 2012 11:26:25 +0000 https://www.classicboat.co.uk/?p=9232#comment-2459 Enjoyed your informative and researched article.

Thought you might lkike to know that I found a collection of rivver boats – single sculls, canoes etc in Britanny recently. The same man also had some 200 outboard engines, mostly post 1950 but several long straight shaft types from the 1900s, a couple of superb Italian jobs, one with twin push me pull me props.
On a stand in his drawing room is an 1894 di Dion Bouton o/b contraption which may well be the earliest combustion engine out board engine.
I have photos of all of these which might interest you.
The owner is getting on a bit now and thinking about what to do with his barn full of “stuff”

Regards,

Peter Gregson

Comment on Rowing Crutches or Rowlocks? by Mike Eaton https://www.classicboat.co.uk/practical-advice/rowing-crutches-or-rowlocks/#comment-2225 Wed, 26 Sep 2012 12:30:39 +0000 http://www.tinyrocketship.com/classicboat/?p=533#comment-2225 Nice to see that some people STILL use the right word for something – a ‘Crutch’ as you rightly say is the bent bit of that sits on top of the gunnel and holds the oar – a ‘Rowlock’ is actually cut into the gunnel to hold the oar (when not in use you put a ‘poppet’ into it to prevent water coming onboard), if we are going to use the language lets use it properly…….makes a real mess of ‘talk like a pirate day’ when the people don’t know what they are talking about!

Me? 37 years at sea, including 10 in the RN, started in ’62 and yes I ‘did’ boats!!!

now where else have I heard the misuse of the language……..something to do with a happy time full of fun and laughter (go on have a guess) nothing like todays use by the looks of it!!

I have “Assent” outside my office and looking for an adventurer to buy her!
Apart from investigating Greenland anchorages it’s been singlehanded to Russia and Antartica and is just as sailed by Willie Ker. Not fitted out for sitting in the marina :-).

Comment on Seagull Outboards by David Remillard https://www.classicboat.co.uk/articles/seagull-outboards/#comment-1961 Fri, 21 Sep 2012 23:57:29 +0000 https://www.classicboat.co.uk/?p=3598#comment-1961 Great to get to know a little more on John through this article…thanks!
Mine is a 1971 Silver Century in truly mint condition…runs like a watch and always starts on first or second pull.
I have three outboards, and the Seagull I use on my 15 foot fiberglass skiff just for the love of listening to the engine and the slow relaxful pace on the water.
My mom was from near where John lives in Britain and I never got a chance to visit throughout my life (I’m 67 now), but just owning and using my Seagull touches a sensitive nostalgic cord which I cherish very much.
Thanks for the bio and thank you John for sharing your passion with us!
