Most modern vessels have lots of electric and electronic devices which aim to make a water trip safe and enjoyable. All of them require power to operate. This is why boats are equipped with two and more batteries that power different systems. A specially designed isolator is essential in such a setup in order to separate those batteries from each other and therefore make sure that the electrical system of a boat won’t pull power from all of them at the same time. Otherwise, they will be drained quickly and you won’t be able to start the engine. That may also cause various electric issues. Battery isolators differ in their design to meet any application.
As we have already mentioned they separate batteries making them discharge independently. However, there is a common charging source. To choose the right model for your electric system, you should consider how many alternators there are. Typically, an isolator is installed between one or two alternators and two or more batteries.
