Motor brackets & jack plates are commonly used to attach an outboard engine to a vessel, and these parts are available in different designs and sizes. The brackets can be fixed and adjustable, but when it comes to adjustability, jack plates could be a better option. Attached to a transom, such a plate can move vertically, and you can affix it lower or higher to elevate or lower the motor. Actually, it's possible to achieve a similar result with the help of the engine’s tilt and trim mechanism, but it has some crucial differences from the plates.
For instance, the plate allows you to alter the height without any changes in the angle of the propeller shaft. Besides, you can locate the motor somewhat farther from the boat, which would increase its total length and make the rear end heavier. Actually, with a jack plate, you can even put the engine out of the water when needed! These parts can be manual and hydraulic; the latter are more convenient to use and require no physical effort for changing position, but their price tags are higher.
