Like any other internal combustion engine, the motor of your boat requires quality, clean oil for lubing its inner parts. If it's two-stroke, the lubricant is added into fuel and doesn't need filtering, but if you own a four stroker, motor oil circulates apart from fuel and has to be cleaned. For this purpose, engineers equip such motors with an oil filter that usually should be replaced at oil change. Its construction and working principle are pretty much the same as in cars, although there is a difference that can be especially important for the vessels used in saltwater: corrosion resistance.
Marine oil filters are typically better protected from corrosion, which is a matter of concern in many cases.
