Motor oil is a crucial substance that has to circulate at the right pressure in order to perform well. This pressure is created by an oil pump, and to suck the oil from the sump whose volume is not so large, a pick-up assembly is utilized. Designed to suit the sump's configuration, this part is essentially a metal tube with a screen or strainer at its lower end. Another end of the tube is attached to the pump, while the strainer is commonly located in the pan as low as possible to be always fully submerged in oil.
In some cases, when the quality of the lube is bad, or if the engine is old enough, the strainer gets clogged, which is dangerous for the whole motor because of oil starvation.
