In most cases, when it comes to boat solenoids, people refer to those designed to actuate the starter. In many marine engines, there are actually two starter solenoids, the slave and master one, with the latter located closer to the starter and connecting with this assembly directly. If installed, the slave solenoid is positioned between the master one and ignition switch. Normally, the starter requires thick wires and high current to operate, and solenoids allow for running such wires from the battery without direct contact with the ignition switch.
Such a scheme allows for making the switch safer and more durable, as it's not subject to high amperage. In this regard, the solenoids perform the same task as the relays, although their construction is different. Typically, boat solenoids have four terminals, one pair for each circuit, and each pair features its own diameter. When any contact is lost, or if something has happened with solenoids, the motor will not start; you may hear just a clicking sound when turning a key.
