An anchor rode preferably should consist of a rope and chain (an anchor is attached to its end). There are several reasons for that. First of all, by using such a combination, you prevent a rope from rubbing against the bottom of a sea, meaning it will last much longer. A chain in its turn holds it on the bottom thanks to its heavy weight. That means the pull is applied on an anchor horizontally, so the chance of its unsetting is minimal. If you are not using a windlass, you can attach a line with a spliced eye to a chain with a shackle. However, if you use it, they should be spliced together.
It is worth mentioning that splicing is a more preferred method of connection when compared to making knobs which reduce the strength of a rope.
