The functions performed by the motor's stator and its working principle are pretty much the same as those of an alternator. The difference is in their constructions, drive type, and the ability to develop more power. Boat stators are commonly installed in outboard motors, and their output can vary from 6 to 40 Amps approximately. Unlike an alternator that comes as a separate assembly driven by a belt, a stator is located under the flywheel that has several magnets, while the stator itself has a certain number of coils.
As the flywheel rotates around the stator, an alternating electrical current is generated in the coils. Then, AC is rectified and regulated to become a stable DC. This energy is needed to run the ignition system, charge the battery if it's installed, and power various auxiliary systems. Over time, however, the stator may go bad, which is fraught with certain issues. While most of the smaller outboards will not even start, bigger engines with six or eight cylinders may just lose a spark in several cylinders and keep on operating less efficiently. Anyway, whichever motor you own, don't postpone the repair, and in our online store, you will find lots of quality replacement stators to do the job.
