Commonly installed in large or high-performance vessels, the hydraulic steering system makes their handling much easier and safer. It greatly reduces your physical effort while you're turning the steering wheel and gives you a smooth, lightweight feel. Depending on the vessel's size, power, and application, such a system may include numerous parts such as one or several hydraulic pumps, by-pass valve, pressure relief valve, and some other components. However, the main parts of any hydraulic setup are a helm and steering cylinder. In most boats, the hydraulic helm includes the pump creating the pressure to move the cylinder and make its rod retract or extend, depending on the direction you turn the steering wheel.
As for the common issues, they are similar to those of any other hydraulic mechanism and caused by fluid leaks, air in the system, low fluid level, etc. Leaks may be caused by faulty cylinder seals located on end caps. In their turn, the seals may deform because of age or mechanical damage to the cylinder rod, so it's recommended to check the rod whether it has any dings or nicks.
