When it comes to painting a boat and protecting its surface, the modern market offers numerous solutions developed using the latest achievements of modern chemistry. But like many years ago, virtually all marine paints and coatings are used with solvents allowing you to reduce their density when needed, prolong cure time, clean sprayers and other tools, and so on. Actually, solvents get improved along with paints and lacquers, and now, their formulations are more effective than ever. They may include ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, glycol ethers, and a bunch of other substances mixed in different proportions.
Some paint manufacturers divide solvents into two basic groups – thinners and reducers. The former are meant for lacquer-based coatings, while the latter are utilized with urethane-based paints. Anyway, for the best result, it makes sense to choose paints and solvents from the same brand and pay attention to their technical datasheets – many manufacturers specify there the series of paints the reducer or thinner has been formulated for, along with some precautions.
