The engine is without any doubt the most significant part of your boat. In order to be able to enjoy worry-free and fuel-efficient performance of your boat, with its smooth and fast glide, you should take care of keeping your boat’s engine in a perfect operating condition. Outboard engines are the most common kind of power units for recreational boats. You can commonly choose from 2- or 4- stroke, electric and propane outboard engines.
Two-stroke power units use the mixture of gas and oil, while four-stroke engines burn gasoline. Though being considerably quieter, four-stroke engines tend to be much heavier. The engine’s weight as well as its power output should be the crucial factors to consider when picking the correct power unit for your vessel. More horsepower provides your boat with enough speed, as well as easy handling, while underpowering your boat may result in excessive fuel consumption as well as make your boat more vulnerable to rough weather conditions.
The main types of boat engines are outboard, inboard, sterndrive and jet boat / personal watercraft engines. Outboard engines are used for small boats and are installed on the transom outside of the hull at the back or at the stern of the vessel. Inboard engines are mounted inside the hull, under the deck and are common for larger boats. Sterndrive engines blend the engine of an inboard with the gearcase of an outboard power unit. As for the jet boat / personal watercraft engines, they do not use propellers, but draw water from beneath the boat into a pump inside the vessel and expel it through a nozzle at the stern.
